State attorney Tampa

The State Attorney’s office of the thirteenth judicial circuit has about 120 attorneys, 12 investigators and other dedicated support staff. The State Attorneys are in charge of prosecuting criminals throughout the county that encompasses Tampa Bay, Temple Terrace and Plant city. The office of the State Attorney Tampa is also actively involved in community interests.  The State Attorneys are also members of various non- profit organizations and community related committees.

The divisions in the State Attorney office include:

  • Felony: Under this division come all felony crimes like child abuse and juvenile thefts and crimes.
  • County court: This division prosecutes violations of traffic laws, violations of county and municipal ordinances and misdemeanor offenses. A misdemeanor offense may entail a year of imprisonment as per Florida’s law.
  • Juvenile: All juvenile cases are handled under this division like juvenile traffic and misdemeanor cases under the age of eighteen. There are specialized programs that address public safety as well as the needs of the juvenile namely; stop theft early and learn, arbitration, shock, wise guys, prodigy, youth opportunity and other programs. These programs are based on the fact that early intervention helps to redirect youth to a positive future.
  • Victim assistance: This program seeks to help victims with problems associated with crime. Counselors provide many services to victims free of cost. These services include emergency services rendered to victims and their family members even after their involvement in the crime, general assistance in the form of information about criminal justice system and about various stages of prosecution, victims compensation, support, victims rights, court room assistance and other assistance like information about community services which they can make use of.

Special counselors will also be able to offer assistance to victims of domestic violence and the worthless check unit provides assistance to victims of bad checks.
